Judson Group has partnered with a boutique family office in downtown Grand Rapids in its search for a Chief Investment Officer.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced investment professional seeking a hands-on leadership role within a boutique firm. Rather than building an investment platform from scratch, you’ll serve as the steward of an established investment philosophy—overseeing portfolio oversight, monitoring investments, conducting research, and helping ensure clients remain well-positioned over the long term. Mentorship of a current Investment Analyst towards the CIO role over the next 5+ years is a key goal of the role as well.
The firm maintains a disciplined, low-turnover investment approach with portfolios primarily consisting of long-held individual equity positions, complemented by fixed income and a select allocation to private investments. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys staying close to the markets, evaluating investment opportunities, and serving as a trusted resource for advisors and clients without the complexity of managing a large institutional investment operation.
Why You’ll Love This Role:
- Become the firm’s trusted investment leader in a collaborative, boutique wealth management environment.
- Work with an established investment philosophy focused on long-term stewardship rather than constant trading.
- Stay engaged in the markets through research, portfolio monitoring, and thoughtful investment oversight.
- Enjoy meaningful influence without the bureaucracy often found in larger organizations.
- Serve as a trusted resource for advisors and clients on investment strategy and market perspectives.
- Maintain a select group of client relationships, if desired, while leading the firm’s investment function.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Oversee the firm’s investment process and help ensure portfolios remain aligned with long-term investment objectives.
- Monitor client portfolios and identify opportunities for thoughtful adjustments when appropriate.
- Conduct investment research and evaluate market trends to support portfolio recommendations.
- Perform ongoing due diligence on investment managers, mutual funds, ETFs, and other investment solutions.
- Oversee portfolio maintenance, including periodic rebalancing, cash management, and trade execution.
- Partner with advisors on investment-related discussions and provide insight during client meetings when needed.
- Contribute investment commentary for client communications.
- Utilize investment technology to support portfolio management and reporting.
- Help preserve and thoughtfully evolve the firm’s investment offering while maintaining its disciplined investment approach.
What We’re Looking For:
- 10+ years of experience in investment management, portfolio oversight, or investment research.
- Bachelor’s degree required; CFA®, CFP®, or other advanced investment designation is preferred.
- Experience monitoring portfolios, conducting investment analysis, and performing manager due diligence.
- Strong understanding of public equities, fixed income, and diversified portfolio management.
- A disciplined, long-term investment mindset with an appreciation for thoughtful portfolio stewardship.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain investment concepts clearly to advisors and clients.
- A collaborative professional who values integrity, sound judgment, and delivering consistent investment outcomes for clients.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Base salary plus bonus of $200,000.
- There is no included benefits package.
